Abstract:Positive Psychology is a science that deals with the enhancement and strengthening of positive emotions and skills. The “Three Good Things Exercise” (3GT) is an exercise in which positive emotions are emphasized and thereby promoting subjective well-being. The aim of this study is to create a better understanding of the processes behind this exercise and to further improve its effectiveness. In this context it is examined which personality traits are the most effective for the study outcome and what sort of life-events people tend to describe as „good“. It is also examined whether there is a correlation between the personality traits and the categorie of good events, recalled by the participants. Effectiveness for this study means an increase of subjective well-being, which is operationalized by the degree of positive and negative affect. This is scaled by the PANAS. The Big Five Personality Traits are quantified by the BFI-10 and the contents of the 3GT are coded by a shortened version of the coding scheme of the “Self-Defining Memories“. The categories found in this study were “success“, “doing something good“, “recreation/exploration“ and “relationships“. The content categories “recreation/exploration“ and “Success“ are mentioned most often. There is no significant correlation between the personality dimensions, positive and negative affect and the event-categories. The high number of “recreation/exploration“ experiences in this study is explained by the principle of „Mindfulness“. The aim hereby is to zoom in on a conscious perception and experience of the environment, whereby enhancing beautiful and joyful experiences and thus promote well-being. This principle appears to form an explanation for the working of the 3GT. The findings of this study provide a deeper understanding of the positive psychology exercise Three Good Things and its function to promote a more positive and conscious life. They furthermore highlight the need for further research and data collection on this field, which may outline and deepen the understanding and knowledge of the subject and increase the effectiveness of the exercise.
