Abstract:This report describes the analysis and redesign of the rotating shut-off nozzle of Stork Injection Moulding Machines. Concepts are presented that are looked at to a certain amount of detail and are almost ready for testing. This research was done by Martijn Venterink as an internship assignment for the Master program of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Twente. The history of changes made to the rotating plug was first listed such that an idea was formed on what was already done. The leakage flow through the passage of the plug and the housing was theoretically examined and the different parameters on which the leakage flow rate is dependent were discussed. It was found that the gap width was the only one that was more than linearly depended. To get a more detailed understanding on how much influence the previously stated parameters have on the leakage flow rate, they are all discussed in more detail and Solidworks Flow Simulations were made. Parameters were changed to see whether they correlate with the theory findings. It was found that the width had the most influence again, followed by the length and the pressure. The last one can also be explained by the fact that it is has also influence on the viscosity. It was concluded that not a lot of parameters could be changed and the choice was made to design concepts on the idea of changing the temperature of the polymer melt, thus increasing the viscosity, and changing the gap width, thus applying (different) sealing methods. One cooling concept with a circumferential cooling channel on the outsides was worked out to some detail, and two concepts for sealing were chosen to explore in more detail. Sealing with packing and with certain mechanical seals are looked at. For the cooling more detailed Solidworks Flow Simulations were made and it seemed that it is possible to decrease the leakage flow to a fair amount. For the two sealing concepts, manufacturers were invited to get a better understanding what was possible and how they could be applied. Finally concluding that the three concepts are all plausible but no hard conclusions could be given. Testing should be done, the operating conditions are so extreme that suppliers of the seals also give the advice of testing in the first place.
