Abstract:Several studies have been conducted on autonomy, competence and relatedness in relation to wellbeing. However, few studies have been conducted among the elderly without dementia, who live in nursing homes. In order to conduct research on elderly, it is important to use a reliable and valid instrument that fits the target group. The aim of the present study therefore was to test if the Basic Need Satisfaction in Life Scale is suitable for measuring autonomy, competence and relatedness among the elderly, without dementia, in nursing homes. To test this, the factor structure, reliability and validity of the questionnaire were taken into consideration. To examine the validity two other questionnaires were used, namely the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) to measure depression among elderly and the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) to measure the satisfaction with life of people. The validity was examined by testing if there was a connection between the BNS-LS and the GDS and SWLS in order to determine the predictive value of the BNS-LS and therefore if it predicts what it should predict in theory. 132 respondents with ages ranging from 56-101 participated in the study. The factor structure of the questionnaire matched the expected 3-factor structure. The reliabilities of those three factors were not all sufficient, even thought it was expected that all three would be sufficient. The criterion validity was good because a significant, positive connection was found between the satisfaction of the need for autonomy, competence and relatedness and the satisfaction with life. In addition, there was also a significant, negative connection between the satisfaction of the need for autonomy, competence and relatedness and the degree of depression. The results show that the BNS-LS is suitable for measuring autonomy, competence and relatedness among elderly, without dementia, in nursing homes.
