Abstract:Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is hard to learn and comes with a lot of risks. It is needed to make predictions on the learning process of MIS to have indications on the amount of practice that is needed and to identify the persons that will never reach a sufficient level of proficiency. Previous research on predicting MIS has focused on the components of this skill. This research takes a holistic approach. Complex motor procedures are analysed to examine the feasibility of predicting the learning process of these task using other tasks. Four tasks were done and the learning curves on these tasks were derived, where three parameters were used: previous experience, learning rate and maximum performance. Only on maximum performance an association was found between two tasks. Therefore, in this research it cannot be concluded that predictions are possible using the holistic approach.
