Abstract:Introduction: Rheumatism is a chronic disease of the locomotor system. The most prominent symptoms are pain and stiffness of the joints and muscles. As a consequence, rheumatism has a huge impact on the quality of life of patients. It is important that rheumatic patients learn to deal with it in a positive manner. Resilience, the ability to recover after a stressful period, is of great importance. A high level of resilience stabilizes the quality of life of chronic pain patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact that resilience has on the life of rheumatic patients. This report examined if resilience has a mediating or moderating effect on the relationship between pain and quality of life. Methods: Participants from the patients’ forum ‘Reuma research partners’ of the Arthritis Centre Twente were approached by letter or email to participate in this study. As a result, 69 rheumatic patients have completed a questionnaire. The questionnaire obtained besides general information of the patients also scores on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Short Form 36 (SF 36) and Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) to determine the intensity of pain, the health-related quality of life and resilience.
