Abstract:The purpose of the performed research was to numerically model artificial surfing waves in a straight wave pool. Using a moving wave dozer as a pressure source, wave formation and breaking due to the interaction between a specific beach formation and the wave dozer was simulated. To do so, the entire domain was meshed using 4 different mesh set-ups. A finite volume approach was used in ANSYS Fluent and later CFX to simulate the water wave behaviour and a Volume of Fluid method was implemented to couple the air and the water domain present during the simulation. Results showed that the model is very sensitive to mesh refinement at the free surface and around the wave dozer. Simulations at different Courant numbers were performed in order to obtain an understanding about the stability behaviour of the system. While final stable results could not be obtained due to the Courant number being too large, it has been shown that the number will have to be lower than 1. Pin pointing the exact Courant number required for stable results is a topic for future research.
