Abstract:A lot of research has taken place concerning peoples' search for risk information. Also the dispersal of risk information by civilians has undergone a fast development due to the newly developed strategies in communication. Still not much research has looked into the motivation behind this search and dispersal of risk information. The present study, therefore aims to investigate the factors motivating civilians' search and dispersal of risk information, using a flooding risk experiment. Literature research suggested that the factors affective response and efficacy might have an influence on the motivation for search and dispersal risk information. Consequently, affective response and efficacy have been used to manipulate the motivation in this study and as a result the present study was a 2 (affective response: low vs high) x 2 (efficacy: low vs high) between participants experiment. Results did not show any significant effects of the affective response and efficacy manipulations on the motivation to search or dispersal risk information. The motivation itself didn’t show any effect either. Furthermore, there were some additional questions added to the present study to examine the dispersal of the risk information more broadly. Previous research on the marketing communication like WOM and eWOM was taken into account in the present study. And the relation between the factors of risk information dispersal (e.g. distance, receiver and communication tool) and demographic variables has also been examined.
