Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine which motion tracking device provided the most reliable method to determine stimulus response curves (SR-curves) for distal excitability testing. The standard method of determining SR-curves is by measuring compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs), using electromyography. The standard CMAP method and two accelerometers were used to determine SR-curves in seven healthy individuals. The two accelerometers used were the BMA180 and the MMS. Experiments were performed in several different setups using the wrist and the motor point as stimulation sites. The results of this study showed that it was possible to determine reliable SR-curves with all tested methods. The MMS accelerometer was concluded to be the most reliable motion tracking device to determine SR-curves, considering the high test-retest reliability and low inter subject variation. The main finding was that none of the methods (BMA180, CMAP and MMS) were perfectly reproducible and further research should focus on improving the reproducibility of motion tracking devices for the determination of SR-curves. Also, further research should be performed on sensitivity and performance of accelerometers for low SIs, in order to determine whether the output of the sensor fits the demands for distal excitability testing.
