| Abstract: | With a very limited number of Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) workshops in Indonesia, the accessibility of assistive devices is a problem. The current production process of lower leg prostheses (LLP) takes about two weeks and many people cannot afford to be away from home for such a long period. A good strategy to reach people in poor, rural areas is to mobilize the prosthetic workshop and bring the product to the people. Existing technology to produce LLPs has been investigated and solutions were sought for problems in the production process. Various concepts are developed and finally, one of the concepts is further developed. This design is named Pontas. It can be produced in less than two hours and does not require any heavy machinery for its production, therefore being suitable for use in a mobile P&O workshop. In this method synthetic cast tape is wrapped around the stump and pressure is applied to create an appropriate socket. Available standard components are used to finish the prosthesis with a shank and a foot. The concept is developed and tested at rehabilitation center Harapan Jaya in Indonesia and the production process was well understood and readily applicable. Several LLPs were made with a good fitting, good alignment and good suspension. Future research has to be done to investigate the durability of the product. |
