| Abstract: | As the sense of coherence (SOC) represents a protective factor for mental health, but little is known about its determinants, it requires further exploration in order to improve mental health promotion. The recently introduced concept of narrative futuring is characterized by the imagination of an ideal future by means of storytelling. A narrative futuring practice appears to be a suitable tool to assess the SOC while incorporating a future-oriented approach. This study explores which global orientation in terms of the SOC is brought to the task of narrative futuring and in which stylistic way the future is imagined. Narrative futuring products are analyzed qualitatively regarding the components of the SOC. Finally, the styles in which the participants approach the future are carved out. As a result, all of the analyzed products display at least one component of the SOC. A variation was found concerning the level of reference and style. As a conclusion, the components of the SOC seem to take a crucial role in the future narratives. Not only offers narrative futuring the possibility to assess the components of the SOC in broader terms, the SOC might even be strengthened by the practice. |
