| Abstract: | Digital innovations like the internet and smart phones have changed the way people communicate. One of the most popular ways of communication is social media like Facebook. It is however not clear what reasons people actually have to become users or non-users, what might determine those choices and how it affects their social life. Information about this can possibly help improve the quality of Facebook, especially through the information non-users can give. Taking away some of their possible hesitations or objections can open up Facebook for those people that want to become users, but are held back for some reasons. This way social exclusion for this group of people might be resolved. At the same time information about the users can give more insight in what Facebook actually offers to people. Do users really have it better than non-users or are there also downsides to Facebook use, like loss of privacy. Furthermore looking into the social lives of both users and non-users can provide insights on which effects Facebook actually has on people social lives and their relationships. Information was gathered by means of a questionnaire for Dutch people between 16-65 years old and interviews with both users and non-users. |
