| Abstract: | Vulnerable people, such as older somatic or psychogeriatric patients, psychiatric patients and people with an intellectual disability generally show more difficulty fulfilling the three human basic needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness. Based on self-determination theory, the main objective of this study was to investigate possible differences in need satisfaction of the need for autonomy, competence and relatedness between these three different groups. Differences in need satisfaction were investigated both from a perspective of need satisfaction in general and need satisfaction in the context of provided care. Following the analyses, no differences between the three groups were found on need satisfaction in general. However, stable differences were found on need satisfaction in the caring relationship, in which people with a mild intellectual disability reported to experience more attention to their needs for competence and relatedness than older somatic or psychogeriatric patients. These results provide new insight into the need satisfaction of mainly independent living older somatic and psychogeriatric patients and people with a mild intellectual disability, who seem to have a different relationship with their caregiver than people living in large institutional settings. The relevance of these outcomes for health care institutions and local governments is further discussed. |
