| Abstract: | Introduction: This study investigated factors that might be related to a readmission after a detoxification program. The focus of the research is on demographic variables, mood and addiction behaviour. When social workers know which patient has an increased chance of readmission they could act on it and possibly prevent it. In the literature there are diverse results but there is no uniformity on this subject. Methods: The data that is analysed in this research consists of dossier data of patients of Tactus Verslavingszorg (Tactus Addictiontreatment) whom had at least one detoxification (N=610). The variables that were measured are readmission, mood (comorbid diagnosis and depression symptoms measured before and after the detoxification), duration of the addiction, frequency of use and the substance used (alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, amfetamines, heroin, nicotine and GHB). Results: This research has shown that respondents with a heroin- or cocaine addiction or a comorbid mooddisorder have a readmission more often than other respondents. There is also a trend observable whereby respondents who are married or living together less often have a readmission. Lastly there is a trend observable whereby having a comorbid mooddisorder increases the chance of readmission. This chance is even higher when a respondent has both a mooddisorder as a cannabis addiction. Discussion: It is recommended that patients with a heroin- or cocaine addiction or a comorbid mooddisorder receive a readmission prevention plan. Further research is needed to investigate the characteristics of these respondents, so that there is more insight in the respondents who return to the detoxification. It is also recommended to start a qualitative research concerning this subject, where there is a more explorative view. |
