Abstract:Background The internet is more broadly used in mental well health. Online treatments are increasingly used and prove effective, but what factors are responsible for this appears still unclear. This study examines the factors in email counselling that help to increase well-being. It focuses on the extent of communication between participant and therapist, the progress of the process, the content of the communication and the relational factors and self-disclosure that may affect the degree of well-being. Method A subsample of 20 participants was used from the larger dataset of Schotanus-Dijkstra et al. (2015), half of the participants were flourishing after the intervention and the other half did not. The book ‘This is your life’ is a self-help book to stimulate positive mental health and aims to increase resilience and well-being. Participants received weekly e-mail support during the completion of this self-help book. Well-being and flourishing were being measured with the MHC-SF. Two coding schemes were developed to analyze the emails of both participants and therapists during this intervention. Results A marginal difference was found in the extent of the communication; participants who were flourishing were consuming an average of more words per message. Participants who did not flourish said they experienced more problems with the content of the exercises, this was also negatively correlated with the degree of well-being. Participants who did not flourish received more motivational support, this was also negatively correlated with the degree of well-being. For given psycho-education was a negative correlation found with the degree of well-being. Finally, supervisors used more positive words to participants who were flourishing, and these participants themselves also used significantly more positive words. No correlation was found for relational factors and self-disclosure with the degree of well-being. Conclusion From the results can be stated that only a small number of factors in e-mail counselling has an influence on the level of well-being. More future research is needed to optimize the support during online treatments, in a way that the outcome can be increased.
