Abstract:In order to help teachers incorporate 21st century skills in their teaching, SLO (‘Stichting Leerplan Ontwikkeling’) has developed educative curriculum materials. This qualitative study, which focused on the 21st century skill problem solving, evaluated materials made for geography and physics. The evaluation comprised three steps. First the material was analysed based on the literature, subsequently lessons in which the material was used were observed, and finally teachers who employed the material were interviewed. In total, 7 secondary school teachers participated. Based on the literature it could be concluded that not yet all elements of problem solving as a 21st century skill were adequately present in the material. From the observations it appeared that problem solving was most of the time only adequately implemented when it was made very explicit in the material. Based on the interviews, it appeared that teachers often found the material a useful means of support, although consideration should be given to the composition of the material to increase the chance of teachers actually using the material. Also the fact that external factors can influence use of the material should be considered. It is recommended that these results will be taken into consideration when developing new materials.
