| Abstract: | Chronic pain is an extensive health problem. An effective intervention for chronic pain is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Psychological flexibility is the central process within ACT. ‘Living with pain’ is an effective online intervention based on ACT. In this study, which is based on earlier research, data of 56 participants who were guided per email by five counselors were examined. Studied was whether the counselors of this intervention could contribute to the change in psychological flexibility from the participants, by adhering to the theoretical framework of ACT in their email guidance. In this study, this was called ACT-consistency. This was examined (1) via qualitative analysis of 75 feedback messages to determine what the average amount of ACT-consistency of counselors was and (2) through quantitative calculations to assess if there was a correlation between the average ACTconsistency of the counselors and the change in perceived psychological flexibility (PIPS) of the participants. These analyzes show that the counselors did not respond ACT-consistently to all participants, within their group of participants. There is also no evidence found that there is a correlation between the degree of ACT-consistency and changes in the degree of experienced psychological flexibility. This study adds to the understanding of the efficacy and practicability of a qualitative analysis method used to determine ACT-consistency. To focus exclusively on the feedback messages from the counselors and leaving the messages of the participants out of the analysis seems insufficient to determine ACT-consistency. Additional research is necessary to answer the research question. |
