Abstract:Background – With the introduction of positive psychology there is a shift in the vision of mental health care. Mental health care settings are mainly aimed at reducing psychopathology. In addition to this focus on psychopathology, more attention is being paid to well-being. The two continuamodel states that well-being is more than the absence of psychopathology. This model has been repeatedly investigated in general populations and barely in clinical populations. This study used a clinical population; clients diagnosed with a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who have been treated at Mediant. The following research question was formulated: “to what extent is the two continuamodel of mental health applied to PTSD clients before and after treatment?” Method – To investigate if the two continuamodel applied to PTSD patients, well-being (MHC-SF) and psychopathology (BSI) were studied. Questionnaires for both were provided from the ROM database, which was available from Benchmark. Respondents completed both questionnaires pre- and post-test. In total 140 respondents (51 male and 89 female) participated with an average age of 40,9 years (SD=11,6). Results – The current PTSD patient group showed that complaint-focused treatment increased well-being and decreased psychopathology, although the degree of well-being remained low and the degree of psychopathology remained high after treatment compared to the general population. There was no significant correlation between well-being and psychopathology. It was found that they are two different dimensions. This was evidence for the two continuamodel. Conclusion – Complaint-focused treatment seems effective among PTSD clients. In this clinical population well-being and psychopathology seem to be two independent dimensions. One explanation may be that a general complaints list was used instead of a specific PTSD-complaints list. Investigation in well-being seems admissible. There is evidence for the two continuamodel among the current PTSD patient group. More research into the two continuamodel among clinical populations is recommended.
