Abstract:Aim: This study focuses upon the positive psychology intervention the Happiness Route. The Happiness Route is an intervention which aims on promoting mental health of chronically ill people with a low socio-economic status through counseling. The aim of the current study is to understand how the intervention is executed and realized by counselors and their participants. It will be examined the counselors’ adherence to a treatment protocol, the methods of their counseling and the quality of interaction with the clients. The study will thus provide inside into the blackbox of the intervention and could be used for its further improvement. Method: The data of logbooks, counselors filled in after each session were used for the analyses. In total 34 treatments were analysed regarding protocol adherence (sessions, phases, methods and working style) and relation (trust, motivation, pleasure, passion, cooperation) between counselors and their participants. Qualitative and descriptive statistics analysis were performed. Results: The results showed that about 50% of counselors were partly adherent. Sessions, phases and methods were mainly performed according to the treatment protocol. All counselors performed a happiness-focused working style, two-third of them also worked problem-focused. The quality of the therapeutic alliance increased over time. The strongest correlation was found between session number and trust. Discussion: The findings gave insight into the blackbox and showed that important principles of positive psychology are partly used in the treatments of the Happiness Route. Happiness-focused and problem-focused working styles are co-existing in the performed treatments. A higher adherence rate could be expected if all logbooks were filled out and the dataset were complete.
