Abstract:Objective Through the increased use of ICT among young people the problem of cybercrime is thought to be growing. However, recent self-report research among adolescents does not point to large proportions of youth committing cybercrime. The current study examines potential reasons for this. The aim of this study is to detect whether indirect estimates (estimates that respondents make during indirect questions compared to other adolescents) are a good manner to find out to what extent a group of people commit a criminal behavior. It is expected that people score high on indirect questions. This is expected because the social desirability plays a less important rol by indirect estimates. It means that the adolescent do not tend to conceal reporting offenses so that the scores are closer to the truth. Furthermore some possible explanations whereon the indirect estimates based on are investigated. By this fact it is expected that the identification with other adolescents and the mood have a negative influence, meanwhile the attitude towards a special offense a positive relation shows. Method Through the calculation of the frequencies and means it was investigated whether there is a difference detectable in the amount of the scores of the indirect and direct questions. Furthermore the correlation between the two types of questioning was calculated to examine whether the order of the questions influence the report of cybercrime. By means of a regression analysis it was also investigated which predictor was relevant in the formation of indirect estimates of seven specific offenses of cybercrime. Results As expected, the analysis revealed that the scores on the indirect questions are higher than the scores on the direct questions and it became clear that as the participants report a more positive attitude towards a specific act of cybercrime. They also reported that a large number of the other adolescents have committed this cybercrime during the past twelve months. Unexpected was the fact that the identification with other adolescents had a positive influence as well on the indirect estimates, so that people who showed a high identification towards the other adolescents also reported that a large number of adolescents have committed this cybercrime. Mood did not have an effect on the indirect estimates. Conclusion Through the analysis, it became clear that the scores of the indirect questions were higher than the scores of the direct questions. Furthermore it became obvious that the identification and the attitude are influential by the formation of indirect estimates. Because of the fact that social desirability plays a less important rol by the formation of indirect estimates and because of the fact that a plenty of the adolescents mostly reported that the indirect estimates over the adolescents are based on knowledge about the group it can be concluded that indirect estimates provide a trustworthy image to what extent a group of people commit a criminal behavior (although the identification and attitude are influential on these estimates).
