Abstract:Starting at the distinction between alternative and traditional media made by Christian Fuchs, the aim of this work was to test to what extend Fuchs’ theoretical classification is apt to classify media in the real world to then come to further conclusions about the potential of alternative media with regard to contributing to progress towards a situation in which media offer a news coverage that conveys a more complete picture of an issue by including the perspective of the disadvantaged which is oftentimes neglected in traditional media. The main research question is: “By which means and to what extend do alternative and traditional media provide different perspectives on the situation of refugees coming to Europe?” Christian Fuchs puts forward a highly Marxist inclined approach. It is questioned to what extend this approach can be of use when being tested on empirical data. For this purpose, two samples comprising three newspaper articles each have been analysed. The central finding of the work is that Fuchs’ claim that only alternative media could provide a critical perspective, could not hold true as counter- evidence has been found in the examined article from the Dutch newspaper “De Telegraaf”.
