Abstract:As economies grow traffic using the infrastructure increases leading to congestion, hampering economy and environment. This research focuses on using social navigation to reduce these negative effects. Social navigation is an addition to the current navigation systems which use realtime/ dynamic traffic information. Whereas 'dynamic navigation' optimizes the route for individual user only, social navigation allows the user to take into account his or her contribution to delay of other drivers and his or her emission. This information gives drivers the opportunity to help others and can make the road system into a team sport instead of an individual sport, i.e. shifting from Wardrop’s user equilibrium towards the system optimum. In this research a framework for social navigation is presented. This framework can be used to incorporate a wide variety of effects of traffic. To test this framework a micro-simulation model based on the formula’s described by Gipps is developed. This model is used to test the effects on travel time, fuel cost and CO2 emission at different levels of congestion, market penetration and altruism. The research concludes that social navigation significantly benefits the road system, with travel time reduction of up to 2.5% for the average driver. The effects start at low market penetration levels and little altruistic behavior. The effects increases with: (i) higher market penetration, (ii) more congested road networks and (iii) more altruistic behavior of drivers. This decrease in combination with the low cost and ease of implementation in the field might just tip the balance and keep economy going.
