Abstract:Hydrogen is an important feedstock for diverse chemical processes. The way it is produced nowadays is mainly by methane reforming which results in high greenhouse gas emissions. By electrolysing water with green energy, green hydrogen gas with high purity can be produced. Platinum has proven to be a good electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis. However, the influence of temperature and pH on this reaction and its kinetics on platinum electrodes is not well defined yet. In this study the influence of temperature and pH on the HER is defined. The overpotential of the HER decreases with temperature and seems to decrease by using stronger alkaline solutions. The influence of the temperature can however only be noticed at higher overpotentials. The reaction mechanism of the HER on platinum could not be identified in this work.
