Abstract:Background The positive psychology focuses on the improvement of well-being. A high degree of well-being can entail many positive aspects, such as better health, recovery from illness and a longer life. The Happiness Route is a positive psychological intervention with the aim of increasing the welfare of socially isolated people with health problems and low socio-economic status. Objective This study focuses on the experiences of participants of the Happiness Route. It examines how the lives of the participants looked before participation in the Route Happiness, what important moments were during participation and what changes are noticed after participation. In addition, we look at the strengths and weaknesses of the intervention, according to participants. Method In this study, ten female participants who have completed the Happiness Route, have been interviewed with semi-structured interviews, about their experiences with the Happiness Route. Results Life before participation in the Happiness Route is described in terms of problems. After participating in the Happiness Route, positive changes were observed. Six strengths and four improvements have been appointed. The strengths are: use of a consultant, ‘nudging’, personal contribution, the activity provides distraction and the design. The improvements are about the questionnaires, the temporality, can’t continue the activity and miscommunication. Discussion The results of this study confirm what previous pilot studies showed. Participation in the Happiness Route delivers positive effects for participants, such as more social contacts and more self-esteem. The Happiness Route can be improved by paying more attention to finding an activity that can be continued without a budget. With new positive psychological interventions, it is advisable to use a consultant, to personally approach the participants and to give them room for personal initiative.
