Abstract:Chronic pain is a very common disorder. In spite of the high prevalence and the drastic consequences, there is no treatment that is effective in a large number of patients in both the curing of the pain and the restoration of the functioning of the patient. Because pain is complex, subjective and changeable over time an effective treatment would have to be individual and multidisciplinary. However, too little is still known about the relationship between personal characteristics and treatment outcomes. Not only patients’ characteristics but also their daily fluctuating thoughts and emotions influence their pain experience. To gain more insight into these relationships, the ‘experience sampling method’ (ESM) is a good method because it uses repeated measurements of patients in their natural environment. New insights obtained by ESM could possibly contribute to the improvement of treatment. The aim of this review was to provide an overview on the latest application of ESM and on the most recent results from ESM research on the relationship between chronic pain and psychological factors. Studies were searched in two databases (PsycINFO and PubMED). After the selection process, which was based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final sample consisted of nine studies. Data was extracted and organized into tables. The results reveal that relatively few ESM-studies analyzed the direct relationship between chronic pain and psychological processes. Furthermore, the replication of results from between-personal levels were often similar to the results on a within-personal level. Exploring 'cross-level' moderation is a promising method to detect patients’ characteristics influencing the processes within an individual. Therefore there is hope for the application of personal medicine in the near future. However, in order to achieve this, more research is needed on ESM 'cross-level' moderation studies on chronic pain and psychological factors. To get the full potential out of ESM measurements, it is furthermore advisable to show processes within persons. Therefore ‘time’ as a variable has to be added in both the research question as well as in the data analysis.
