Abstract:Introduction Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a promising therapy for patients with chronic pain. ACT can be an alternative for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT is a proved and effective therapy for patients with chronic pain, but the effects are small. In ACT, parts from cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy and mindfulness based therapy are integrated. Patients learn during the therapy to stay connected with their unpleasant emotions, feelings and thoughts. The purpose of ACT is not to bring down the pain intensity, but to achieve a higher level of acceptance and more actions towards what the patient finds important in life. With ACT the purpose is to try to increase psychological flexibility of the patient. In this study we will examine the experiences of patients and their therapists with ACT in the hospital ZGT Almelo in the Netherlands. Methods In this study interviews were held with three therapists and six patients diagnosed with chronic pain which participated in the ACT on the ZGT Almelo. The interview schedule was semi-structured and directed at the experiences of the patients and their therapists. The qualitative data were transcribed and analyzed. Results In general the therapists and patients were positive about ACT. No respondent experienced the overall therapy as negative. The respondents described changes in mood, activity and social contacts of the patients. Besides that, the different disciplines in the ZGT which were involved in the therapy are described as positive, just as the different subjects of the therapy. As points of improvement the respondents called the care afterwards and time to rest during the therapy days. Conclusion ACT in the ZGT Almelo is experienced as positive by the patients and their therapists. Patients all have experienced positive consequences from the therapy. They are positive about the different disciplines and the subjects of the therapy. Working with ACT is described as positive by the therapists. They find it a clear and realistic therapy to work with.
