| Abstract: | Background: This study analyses self-defining memories of Dutch adults of 45 till 55 years old and investigates the correlation between the dimensions of self-defining memories and anxiety- and depression complaints. The dimensions and sequences of self-defining memories are analyzed and compared with the results of the study of Poortinga (2013), which used the same respondents. It is interesting to analyze the similarities over time. Method: This study is a part of a longitudinal study which exists of three measurements with three different groups (adolescents, adults and elderly). This research contains 208 adults. For analyzing the self-defining memories, this study used the Self-Defining Memory Task (SDMT, Blagov & Singer, 2004). For analyzing the anxiety- and depression complaints, this study used the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales (HADS, Spinhoven, Ormel & Sloekers, 2007). Results: The results indicate that social relationships are typical for the content of self-defining memories of adults and most self-defining memories are described. Present study indicates, in contrast to Poortinga (2013), that most self-defining memories are general (specificity), descriptive and more negative than positive. Both studies suggest a (weak) positive relation between the dimension ‘negative meaning for the person/life’ and anxiety complaint and a (weak) negative relation between ‘general memories’ and depression complaints. The prevalence for depression complaints are the same as other studies suggest, and the prevalence for anxiety complaints are in this study lower than other studies suggest. Conclusion: This study shows a relation between self-defining memories and anxiety- of depression complaints of Dutch adults of 45 and 55 years old. This study offers evidence and pratical tools for the mental healthcare and science. In order to specifiy the relationship between self-defining memories and anxiety- and depression complaints, further research is necessary. This study provides improvements for further research.
