Abstract:Background. Patients with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders probably will never recover completely and, therefore, will need different treatment. There must be more attention to how these patients could live a good life with their handicap. The positive psychology, whose popularity is increasing currently, ties in with this: It is directed on the strengths of the patients and not on their problems, and thereby aims at increasing their well-being. By this reason, there must be found a new definition of recovery in consideration with the patients’ view of it. Many studies were directed on different groups of patients, but there is little known about patients with schizophrenia. In the recent study, it will be examined which themes are found important for recovery by patients with schizophrenia. Thereby, treatments can be made more client-centered whereby patients could reach optimal recovery. Method. The recent study was part of the big research with PhotoVoice by Vansteenkiste (2014) about the meaning patients with schizophrenia give on their recovery. Interviews from 15 patients were analyzed. In a first step, prior coding schemes from Van Brakel (2015) and Ehling (2015) were integrated by a subjective judgment in order to remove double codes. The developed coding scheme existed of the codes Inner meaning, Valuing others, Functioning and Materiel support. In a second step, the typewritten interviews were analyzed by means of this coding scheme. Results. Referring to both, the hierarchy of the themes explored by the frequency in which the patients named them, and the co-occurrences of these themes, it seems that the patients find the themes Inner Meaning and Valuing Others especially important for their recovery. Based on the co-occurrences, the themes can be clustered in Enriching relationships, Self-expression in collective challenging Activities, and Attitude about the disorder. The two first named clusters support the importance of Inner meaning and Valuing others for recovery. Thus, they seem to value special characteristics, cognition, affinities, and activities to express their identity. In addition, they find it important to have ambitions, goals and hope. This importance becomes also apparent by the cluster Attitude About the Disorder. In relation to Valuing Others, they experience relations with others – and especially the relatedness, the social interaction and learning from others within these relations – as supporting. The themes Functioning and Material Support are found less important for recovery. Further, the patients from the recent research are in the final stage of their recovery. Conclusion. Based on the meaning of patients with schizophrenia, who are in the end-stage of recovery, the following profile became apparent: The own personality, being future-oriented and relations with others are regarded as most important for recovery, whereas fewer value is given to good functioning and money or medication. Regarding to the positive psychology, the psychological well-being is experienced as most important for recovery. For future research it would be interesting to analyze whether there are differences in the meaning of recovery between patients of different phases of recovery.
