Abstract:Introduction Nowadays professionals in mental health settings implement more and more a personal and strengths approach. One of the methods in which the client is centered concerns Solution Focus Therapy (OGW). This way of working is widely used in various care settings and appears accessible, effective and useful for different clients and age groups. Training as part of socialization allows professionals to identify themselves with the methodology in order to control the approach. However, there are relatively few studies on the training OGW. Although the limited results that are available are positive, it appears that professionals experienced difficulties in effectively implement the solution focus approach. In this study, facilitating and obstructing factors in the socialization process of professionals regarding OGW is examined. Method Use has been made of data from a longitudinal qualitative study; twenty professionals have been interviewed -three semi-structured interviews per person- over a period of a year. They have attended five OGW meetings. For this study, interviews from three randomly selected professionals have been analyzed. Each case is introduced by a narrative overall impression; an element of the holistic content analysis. At an individual level a qualitative thematic overview is given, focusing on the socialization process as a whole and on facilitating and obstructing factors in this process. A recapitulatory thematic overview at a common level is also discussed. Theoretical socialization phases and tasks in both overviews constitute the structuring principle. Results The key enabling factors include practical information and feedback, practical application, awareness, positive interpersonal relationships, self-efficacy, accurate interpretation and perceived effectiveness of the approach. After sufficient stability around task management, role adoption and social inclusion it seems there is increased motivation and commitment. Related factors include personal development, achievement and job satisfaction. The main limiting factors include uncertainty and insufficient knowledge and skills as well as related problems in the performance of tasks, role ambiguity and a tendency to a guiding role concerning solutions. Conclusion and discussion As the socialization process progresses, professionals become better integrated into the organization. They primarily use a general OGW approach; later in the socialization process they progress through task management and role adoption, internalized the approach and more (specific) techniques are applied. It is recommended to do systematic research on a proactive attitude from the professional, reflection and acculturation.
