Abstract:The goal of this research was to investigate the construct validity of the welzijnsmeter, a dementia specific measuring instrument for quality of life in the geriatric care. The welzijnsmeter is an observational questionnaire which seeks to incorporate recent trends in psychology, such as positive psychology and a more client centered approach, in order to enable the direct care giver to meet the individual needs of the client. The scores on the welzijnsmeter were compared to scores on other already validated observational questionnaires which measure comparable aspects which also the welzijnsmeter incorporates. For 63 people in geriatric care, six observational questionnaires were filled in additionally to the welzijnsmeter. Between the scores on the welzijnsmeter and the criteria questionnaires strong correlations are expected, respectively between specific subscales and the criteria questionnaires. The correlations of the welzijnsmeter with the scores of these already validated questionnaires, most of the expected correlations were found which indicates that the welzijnsmeter is capable of giving a valid indication of the client’s quality of life.
