Abstract:Contemporary education emphasizes the importance of using individual characteristics in learning situations. This is only possible when an individual characteristic is well understood and valued. This study contributes to the literature by investigating a trait that is not well investigated yet: a highly sensitive sensory processing style [hsps]. The study had two aims. First, to investigate the relation between highly sensitive students and goal orientations in the classroom. It was expected to find a correlation between highly sensitive students and avoidance goals. Second, the characteristic was compared to introversion. It was expected that the two variables would differ from each other. The overall aim was to learn more about highly sensitive students in general. In total 230 students (Mage = 10) were compared on the various dependent variables involved. The results showed that there were no correlations between the variables hsps and extraversion. Furthermore, a small but significant correlation was found between performance avoidance goals and highly sensitive students in mainstream classrooms. The percentage of highly sensitive students was noticeably higher in special education settings when compared to mainstream classroom settings with a 36% to 13.6% comparison. These numbers indicated a relation between sensitivity and learning difficulties. Future research should further explore this relationship.
