Abstract:Purpose. Aim of this study was to explore the relationship between subjective vitality, positive mental health and flourishing. The intention was to find out what role physical experiences play in describing positive mental health and how the construct of subjective vitality with its “psycho-physical” characteristics is related to flourishing. It was hypothesized that (1) emotional, social and psychological well-being and (2) subjective vitality are positively related to flourishing and that (3) subjective vitality besides social, emotional and psychological well-being, adds value in explaining the variance of flourishing. Method. The study made use of cross-sectional data from a previously collected online questionnaire conducted by the University of Twente. Relevant diagnostic instruments were the Mental Health Continuum – Short Form, the Subjective Vitality Scale, the Flourishing Scale and demographical questions concerning age and gender. The psychometric properties of the instruments were found to be good. The first and second hypothesis were tested by analyses of correlation. In addition, a VIF-test was carried out to control for multicollinearity. The third hypothesis was tested by a multiple hierarchic regression analysis. Finally, a mediation analysis was carried out in order to verify whether the relationship between positive mental health and flourishing was mediated by subjective vitality. Results. The results showed that subjective vitality and emotional, social and psychological well-being positively correlated with flourishing. Multicollinearity could be excluded by means of the VIF-test. The multiple hierarchic regression analysis showed that subjective vitality, emotional and psychological well-being were significant predictors of flourishing. Social well-being, age and gender were not adding value in the explanation of flourishing. It was also found out that the relationship between positive mental health and flourishing was partially mediated by subjective vitality. Conclusion. The results of this study indicated that “psycho-physical” experiences played a role in the experiencing of flourishing and that emotional, social and psychological well-being had an unexpectedly low contribution in the experience of flourishing. These results encourage further research to operationalize the described constructs in an adequate way, to adjust their measuring instruments sufficiently and to examine further predictors that could explain the unknown explained variance of flourishing.
