Abstract:Objective: People with a personality disorder often experience various restrictions in their daily life, and the cost of their health care is relatively high. Jeffrey Young, who developed schema therapy, believes that personality disorders are a result of dysfunctional schemas, and he has developed a therapy that seeks to reduce these dysfunctional schemas: Schema therapy. One of the basic principles of this theory is that perceived parenting styles have an important role in the development of dysfunctional schemas. However, there is little empirical research on this correlation and this study attempts to contribute to it. Method: This study has a pre-test/post-test design, without a control group, which takes place in a practical context. Participants are people with a personality disorder who have sought treatment at a center for clinical psychotherapy. Participants filled in questionnaires at the start and at the end of their treatment. The questionnaires measure participants’ schemas (Young Schema Inventory), the perceived parenting style of their parents (Young Parenting Index) and the level of symptoms that a participant experiences (Brief Symptom Inventory). Data analysis consists of correlations and mean differences. Results: A positive correlation was found between certain schemas of participants and their perceived partenting styles of their parents, but this was not the case for all schemas. With the exception of two out of 18 schemas, schemas for participants were scored lower after completing treatment compared to the start of their treatment. No correlation was found between the level of experienced symptoms of participants and the perceived parenting style of their parents. A positive correlation was found between the change in the level of experienced symptoms of participants and the change in the extend to wicht hey describe their parents as “punitive”. Discussion: The results of this study partially support the basic assumptions of schema theory as proposed by Young. Expected correlations were found, but not for every parenting style for both parents. The results of this study suggest that mother plays a bigger role than father when it comes to the development of schemas. The basic assumptions of schema theory appear to be more complicated that assumed and schema therapy may benefit from further research that explores the details of schema theory.
