Abstract:Background: Flourishing occurs when people experience high levels of well-being on the various components (emotional, social and psychological). Flourishing is related to less psychological symptoms, but this relationship is not perfect. There are also people with a mental disorder who still flourish. This study examined the symptoms off obsessive-compulsive disorder, because research shows that OCD compared with other anxiety disorders, has a significantly worse quality of life as a result. It is unclear in witch extent people with OCD flourish and witch factors are associated with flourishing. It is also not known if there is a difference in these factors among people with OCD symptoms and without OCS symptoms. Aim: The aim of this study is to explore if there is a difference between predictive factors among people with or without OCD symptoms. This study examined personality traits and demographics. Method: This study is based on data from the LISS panel (Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences). A representative sample of 1581 Dutch adults has filled in the Health Continuum – Short Form (MHC-SF), de Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP). Regression analyses where carried out to examine if there is a possible (predictive) relationship between personality traits, demographics and flourishing among humans in the category probably without OCD symptoms, presumably OCD symptoms and probably with OCD symptoms. Results: The results of the study show that both demographics and personality traits are not significantly related to flourish among people in the category probably OCD symptoms. This while emotional stability is positive significantly related to emotional, social and psychological well-being in this category. We also found that the personality traits extraversion, emotional stability and agreeableness are characterizing for people to flourish in the category probably without OCD symptoms. Remarkably in the current study people with OCD symptoms are more likely to flourish (21.4%) than languish (10.9%). Conclusion: Dutch people appear in comparison with other countries such as the United States a flourishing population, but there is still more research needed on the prevalence of flourishing. While personality traits are most strongly related to flourishing, demographics appears to have little influence on this. There are large differences found between the categories probably without OCD symptoms, presumably OCD symptoms and probably OCD symptoms. It was remarkable that none of the factors are significantly related to flourishing in the category probably OCD symptoms. More research is needed to support these assumptions.
