Abstract:Objectives. This study used a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) for the difference in effects of online-based life-review intervention ‘Op verhaal komen-online’ (‘OVK-online’) on adults (40+) suffering from mild to moderate depressive symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the difference in effect of two courses (‘Individual’ and ‘Peers’) on depressive symptoms and social support. Further, the level of adherence was investigated in terms of differences between the courses as well as the relationship between adherence and the difference in effectiveness of ‘OVK-online’ concerning the courses. Method. The sample included 23 participants and course ‘Individual’ (n=13) and course ‘Peers’ (n=10) were compared. The study used two measurements: pre-measurement (t0) (before the intervention) and re-measurement (t1) (after de intervention). The difference in effect of the courses by the intervention were measured with repeated measurement ANOVA’s, using the scores of the measurement instrument CES-D (depressive symptoms) and SSL-I-12 (social support). T-tests and correlations were used in order to measure the differences of adherence and the relationship between adherence and difference in effectiveness of the intervention concerning the courses. Results. There were no different effects between the two courses in terms of the depressive symptoms and social support. Furthermore, there were no differences in adherence between the courses. However, there was a difference in the relationship between adherence and effectiveness concerning the courses. A higher level of adherence was associated with a higher level of esteem support within the course ‘Peers’. Conclusion. Both courses in the online-based life-review intervention of the elderly (40+) with mild to moderate depressive symptoms seem equally effective for depressive symptoms and social support. This study supports the existing discussion about the best format concerning the effectiveness of interventions. The study argues that there is no distinction needed between individual and group courses. To draw a definitive conclusion, further investigation of the underlying mechanisms such as activated processes and personality is necessary. In addition, the study demonstrates that adherence was equally obtained in both courses. Furthermore, the conclusion can be drawn that within course ‘Peers’ a dose-response relation exists. A higher level of adherence was associated with a higher level of esteem support in the ‘Peers’ course.
