Abstract:Background: A serious mental illness (SMI) can have a devastating impact on quality of life. In the past, a SMI was considered as a chronic and debilitating disease which they could not recover. This information is questioned because of the rise of the recovery movement. Moreover, there is an increasing criticism of the dominant biomedical model. Reason for this is that the model is not meeting de patients’ recovery needs adequately. A recent study by Vansteenkiste explored with de PhotoVoice method detected four key elements in recovery: significant others, significant places, significant activities and inner significance. This research investigates whether these four key elements are reflected, by analysing the interviews with a new research group. The aim of this research is to develop a model from the point of the patients’ view with a SMI of meaningful factors during recovery. Through this model, treatments can be better tailored to the patient in order to promote an optimal recovery and reintegration into society. Method : This research is part of a study which explored de perceptions of recovery from patients with a SMI. For the research we analysed the interviews of nine participants to create a coding scheme. This scheme is based on a preconceived format and on principles of the grounded theory. The code scheme that eventually has been created refers to the categories significant others, significant places, significant activities, inner significance and material support. Results :The results indicate that the most supportive factors relate to the individual. In particular, having certain personal characteristics and the acceptance of the disease is experienced as extremely useful. Also having valuable relationships seems out to be indispensable. Activities to fill their day and to develop themselves help the participants to look beyond the disease. Participants also value material support, namely the right medication and enough money. Finally, few participants experienced support to certain places where they feel comfortable. Conclusion: This developed model seems to be the most comprehensive compared to the literature. It is a broad and well-organized model that can be easily applied in practice. It is important that a treatment provides support on the various factors of this model. The amount of support depends on the degree of importance for the patient.
