Abstract:Objectives: Depression in the frail elderly is a common problem in the Netherlands. Research has shown that life review is an effective way to prevent symptoms of depression in this group. An intervention that links life-review and theories about the autobiographic memory is ‘dierbare herinneringen’. This intervention uses volunteers to perform life-review meetings with frail elderly people with mild to moderate depression symptoms. In this study the volunteer will be analysed during the talks with a participant. This research focuses on the question: What are the used interview techniques by volunteers in a life review intervention to prevent depression in frail elderly. The scientific importance of this study is to monitor the use of volunteers in life-review interventions. It is also important because the results of this study can possibly lead to a way to evaluate the use of volunteers in life-review interventions. In this study the intervention ‘dierbare herinneringen’ is evaluated based on the results. Method: This is an explorative one-case study uses a qualitative methodology. Five meetings between a volunteer and a participant have been transcribed. The transcripts of these meetings are fragmentised and inductively analysed (bottom-up). Results: There are four main themes found that lead to four bigger concepts. The concepts are: method, interview techniques, (therapeutic) alliance and (therapeutic) conditions. These four concepts are related to tasks that the volunteer takes on. In each of these task there is the question; what should the intervention offer to fulfil these tasks and can we expect the volunteers to take these tasks. The boundary between volunteer and professional is in the study approach in an ethical way. Conclusion: Based on this research the interview techniques that the volunteer uses, can be divided in to four concepts. Based on how these concepts are implemented life-review interventions that uses volunteers could be evaluated. However; the boundary between professionals should be chosen carefully. The intervention ‘dierbare herinneringen’ shows a focus on all four concepts and so shows to be an example for what a life-review intervention should be like.
