Abstract:Background: 1 out of 5 adolescents in the Netherlands have psychosocial problems. Only a quarter of them seeks help for their problems. With the introduction of the new ‘Wet maatschappelijke ondersteuning’, the ‘Jeugdwet’ and the ‘Participatiewet’ on January 1, 2015, municipalities have been given the task to enlarge the self-reliance and participation of citizens and at the same time to lower the access threshold for help and support. Municipalities have to focus even more on early detection and prevention of problems by giving information and advice. Especially for adolescents eHealth could be an innovative way to lower the access threshold. The school social work is a low threshold provision for young people with psychosocial problems and they could probably reach even more adolescents through the use of eHealth. Objective: The objective of this study is to make an inventory of the support for an information- and advice service for adolescents with psychosocial problems among professionals and adolescents. The target group of this study are adolescents with psychosocial problems in secondary education. The research is done by order of Wijkracht in the municipality of Hengelo. They have been commissioned to organize the client support. Method: A qualitative study using focus groups is carried out. The focus groups consisted of 27 adolescents from secondary schools, divided into 2 groups and a group of 9 professionals whose job directly or indirectly is dealing with young people with psychosocial problems. Using Power Point presentations and detailed scripts, the participants have been asked questions, using the answers to get an image of the opinions, wishes, needs and expectations of the participants with regard to an information- and advice service for young people with psychosocial problems. Results :According to the professionals the disadvantages of an information- and advice service outweigh the benefits. Professionals see too many obstacles to execute a service. They find it hard to deal with digital contact and think that early detection of problems is easier through to physical activities. Professionals lack computer skills, online communication skills and technical resources to execute eHealth. Professionals do have an open mind to learn new things. Adolescents also see more disadvantages then advantages of a service. They prefer personal contact over digital contact, because the internet can be unreliable. Adolescents advice to hire more young professionals so you can reach more young people. An information- and advice service should, in their view, be cheerful and accessible to a wide audience. Conclusions: It is important that Wijkracht invests in trainings for professionals to learn new competences and increase their knowledge and skills of eHealth. When hiring staff, it is important to look closely at the skills and competences of professionals. Young people prefer young professionals who have experience with adolescents who have psychosocial problems. In addition, young people need a combination of old-fashioned and innovative technological way of organising help. To work efficiently, one has to link up with similar services to reach an even wider audience. Support for an information- and advice service for young people is at this moment not large enough among young people and professionals, but there are possibilities to increase it.
