Abstract:The purpose of this study was to assess mobile apps based on positive psychology. Positive psychology focuses on, for example, happiness, positive emotions and well-being. This assignment is directed on the achievement of personal goals. For this research, 28 existing apps for smart phones and/or tablets where selected and analysed on the aspects theory, usability and persuasive technologies. Examples of these theories are the SMART and the TOTE, which are both scientifically based. For the analysis of the usability, the System Usability Scale (SUS) is used, which systematically assesses apps on the points complexity, technical expertise, integration of various functions, inconsistencies within the system and the feelings of the user during the process. Finally, the use of persuasive technologies, as described by Oinas-Kukkonen & Harjumaa (2009) are discussed. These technologies can be divided into four categories: primary task, supportive dialogue, system credibility and social support. These categories consist of 7 criteria each. The conclusion of this research is that none of the selected apps made use of the scientifical theories. This means that the apps give no clear guidelines when the user is drafting the goals and that there is an considerable improvement possible in this area. It is also important to look at the used persuasive theories and contemplate if more theories can be implemented to guide the user in his process. This also would help motivate the user. On the usability of the apps can be stated that the apps are generally average in score but, the scale used, the SUS, does not completely fit the system that is reviewed in this study. However, these findings do not render the apps immediately unusable. Further research on the possibilities of developing apps together with the education of potential users is encouraged.
