Abstract:Background: The last ten years have witnessed an increasing number of health-promoting mobile technologies that use different persuasive strategies for the purpose of shaping, reinforcing and changing behavior. However, there has been little research on how to tailor these strategies to different users and user groupes to achieve a desirable outcome and to maximize the succes of such technologies. Purpose: This study is a first attempt to establish a scientific basis for personalizing strategies from the PSD-model (Oinas-Kukkonen & Harjumaa, 2009) on the basis of individual personality traits. The aim of this study was therefore to gain more insight in the relationship between personality traits and preferences for certain persuasive strategies in health-promoting mobile applications. Method: Data were collected through a cross-sectional online survey among 188 participants using storyboards depicting eight different persuasive strategies aimed at promoting physical activity, the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), and seven questions with respect to how the participants evaluated the depicted persuasive strategies. Results: Results of the present study showed that all of the Big-Five personality constructs were significantly related (both positive and negative) to preferences for certain persuasive strategies that aimed at promoting physical activity. Conclusion: On the basis of the results it could be concluded that there is a statistically significant association between personality and preferences for persuasive strategies in health-promoting mobile applications. The significant relationships that were found indicated that persuasive health-promoting applications may better accommodate the needs of diverse users by considering their individual personality types. The results of this research could be of great value for designers of health-promoting persuasive technologies to design interventions/ applications that "match" with user profiles and that can be tailored to the individual personalities for maximum success across a diverse population.
