Abstract:Stress can be defined as a psychological state of arousal caused by an environment, an event, or thoughts which are percieved as threatening and unmanageable. Research has shown that stress is related to certain personality traits, to wit: neuroticism, extraversion en conscientiousness. This paper focuses on the influence these personality traits have on self reported stress levels. To induce stress, the Sing-a-Song Stress Test has been used. In this test, participants are asked to sing aloud in the company of two other individuals. Using electrodes, the mean amplitude of skin conductance can be measured, which is used as a measure for physiological stress. Together with self reports on stress, reported on a scale of one to nine, the relationship between physiological stress and the three personality traits can be discovered. Though the stress test was very succesful in inducing stress, no relationships were found between personality traits and self reported stress levels.
