Abstract:In this research we looked for the effect of conflict asymmetry on the relation of conflict style and the need for help for people between 17 and 74 years old. We expected that people with a problem solving style have an increased need for relational help, especially when they experience a higher degree of conflict than the other side. Also expecting that people with a forcing style have an increased need for procedural help, especially when they experience a higher degree of conflict than the other side. This was investigated through a scenario study followed by a questionnaire. Participant had to imagine that they work together with a colleague on a very important project. Random they get a scenario in which they had a higher degree of conflict experience, a symmetric conflict experience or a lower degree of conflict experience. After reading this they had to answer questions about which sort of help they need and which sort of conflict style they would use/used. Through regression and ANOVA analysis in SPSS we got our results. Results show that people with a problem solving style need relational and procedural help. People with a forcing style need only procedural help. Conflict asymmetry seems to have no effect on the relation of conflict style and the need for help. Men in general had less need for help than had woman. In the end the results, possibilities for follow-up studies and positive and negative points are discussed.
