| Abstract: | Previous research regarding the relation of religion and well-being has, partially due to different operationalizations of the construct ‘religion’, led to mixed findings. This study utilises a multidimensional operationalization of religion in which inclusion and integration of already by research identified aspects of religion were used for construction. This multidimensional operationalization was used to carry out an exploratory study to compare the relation of religion and anxiety/mood symptoms among clinical and normal populations. The Brief Symptom Index (BSI) and a multidimensional religion questionnaire were, for the aim of this study, administered to clinical patients suffering from an anxiety disorder (n = 98), clinical patients suffering from a mood disorder (n = 140) and a control group (n = 150). The comparison of these three research groups has, through correlation and regression analyzes, led to the identification of a consistent significant positive influence of 'religious views' on the experience of anxiety and mood symptoms. This religious dimension includes the views/opinions of people towards God. These ‘religious views’ appear consistently significant, yet weak predictive for the experience of anxiety and mood symptoms across all three populations. This study makes a constructive contribution to the understanding of the relationship of religion with anxiety and mood symptoms.
