Abstract:Our society is getting “older” through the years. Every day there are more elderly people in need of adequate health care. The costs to provide this care are rising steady and will not be sustainable forever. Costs for health care will become too high in the future, so a solution for this problem must be provided. Video-tele-care could be a possible solution for the problem. This research has found different factors which influence the intention of use of video-tele-care by elderly people over the age of 70 years old. These factors are, accessibility, the assumed ease of use of the computer, laptop or tablet, the assumed ease of use of video-tele-care, experience and knowledge, the subjective and social norm standards, attitude towards the computer, laptop or tablet, the assumed pros and cons of the use of video-tele-care, the assumed influence of the health of the user on the use of video-tele-care, the way of learning to use video-tele-care and the fact that video-tele-care must never replace actual face to face contact with the health personal. Some of these factors are derived from behavioral models like the “Theory of Planned Behavior” or the “Technology Acceptance Model”. Some factors seem to influence the intention to use video-tele-care more than others. Two new factors were found. The way of learning to use video-tele-care and the fact that video-tele-care must never replace actual face to face contact with the health personal. There has not been written much in literature about which factors influence the intention of elderly people above the age of 70 to use video-tele-care. Therefore it is of great importance that research will be done on this topic in the future to ensure the future implementation of video-tele-care. Through semi structured interviews ten men and women above the age of 70 were interviewed about their intentions to use video-tele-care and the factors that influence their intention. This research has shown that especially the factor “way of learning” is of great influence on the intention of the elderly men and women. It is very important that more research will be done on this topic in the future. Findings could support the actualization of e.g. a training session for elderly people to learn more about the use of video-tele-care. The factors accessibility, the assumed ease of use of video-tele-care, the attitude towards video-tele-care and the fact that video-tele-care must never replace actual face to face contact with the health personal, also seemed to be of influence on the intention of the elderly men and women. The influence of the other factors were neglect able according to this research.
