Abstract:In this study the effects of perspective-taking on empathy and attitude toward an offender, as well as on participants’ opinion about appropriate penalties for this offender were examined. It was expected that participants who were instructed to take the perspective of the offender would report more empathy and a more positive attitude, and were likely to give less severe penalties than participants who did not get the instruction to take the offender’s perspective. In addition, the effect of time was examined as well by using the same questions about empathy, attitude and appropriate penalties; it was expected that the mentioned above effects would increase after one week. To test the expectations, a 2 (perspective-taking vs. control) x 2 (time of filling out the questionnaire: immediately vs. one week later) mixed factorial design was employed (N = 75). Little support was found for the hypotheses; the perspective-taking manipulation did not affect empathy, attitudes or severity of penalties imposed. This illustrates the complex nature of the phenomenon perspective-taking as there seem to exist more factors which determine whether perspective-taking causes positive effects or not. The results of this study, several factors which may play a role in determining the effects of perspective-taking and implications for further research are discussed.
