Abstract:This study examined if group membership and the anticipated checking of truthtelling has an influence on the degree to which people are willing to take the perspective and help an offender. All participants were manipulated to think about their own ‗criminal deeds‘. It was expected that when the manipulation had succeeded, participants were more willing to take the perspective of and help an outgroup offender, than an ingroup offender. In addition, this effect should be especially prevalent when participants could answer in a socially desirable fashion, but not when they were given prior notification. But there was also expected to weaken this effect when participants were given prior notification to be validated. It was than expected that participants gave less social desirable answers. Eventually 81 participants participated in the survey and completed the questionnaire. The analyzes showed that none of the expected hypotheses were supported. But the analysis did showed that when participants were given the message to be checked for completion in truth, they were less anxious to take the perspective of a perpetrator of the outgroup. This was contrary to the expectation. Alternative possibilities and points of improvement were given in the conclusion and discussion part of this study.
