Abstract:Introduction: According to the WHO (2015) more and more infectious diseases do have a zoonotic cause. A zoonosis that forms a global problem is the bird flu, because of migratory birds the worldwide fauna is strongly connected. Some variants of this virus (Type A) are transferable to humans. But certain groups of people do have a higher risk to get ill from zoonosis due to different factors. Furthermore people form mental models over particular concepts that influence their thoughts and actions and that can result in healthy of protective behavior. Method: There will be at least eight semi-structured interviews to conduct in Enschede referring to zoonosis. The interview addresses seven different domains, namely prevention, spreading/reservoir/contamination, origin, risk-factors, consequences, treatment and need for information. After these interviews are conducted transcriptions will be created to prepare the analysis. The thematic analysis follows three steps: open coding, axial coding and selective coding (HK). Results: Errors in reasoning were found in four out of seven domains, namely prevention, spreading/reservoir/contamination, risk-factors and treatment. Furthermore, some respondents pointed out that they had no idea for example considering the domain spreading, reservoir and contamination. In addition the descriptions of preventive actions remained very broad. In the majority of interviews, the participants named internet as the source of information. Discussion: The errors in reasoning and broad beliefs about bird flu function as a starting point for future quantitative research. It will be interesting to create items based on these results to conduct a quantitative study to measure how often these errors in reasoning are apparent in the general Dutch public. In this study the participants often indicate to use the internet as a source of information. If this would be verified in a quantitative study, it would be effective to create an interactive website. The Protection Motivation Theory is therefore a framework to understand how people form their intentions and behavior and how they can be influenced.
