Abstract:Chronic pain is a common problem. People that suffer from chronic pain also have to deal with the severe negative consequences of chronic pain in their daily lives. Most available therapies for chronic pain focus on preventing pain or pain relief. For people that suffer chronic pain these therapies often don’t show results. ‘Leven met pijn online’ (Living with pain online) is an online self-help program that addresses chronic pain with principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT doesn’t focus on the pain but uses i.a. mindfulness principles in order to facilitate a patient in leading a valuable life despite the pain. The first trial with this program showed good results. The first trials with ‘Leven met pijn online’ included weekly email contact with a psychologist as guidance. The aim of this study is to study the possibilities of using the same program with minimal guidance. In this study six physical therapist were asked to give two patients the ‘Leven met pijn online’ program and have them follow the program with minimal guidance. Five of these therapists were interviewed about their experience with this program as a self-help method. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using qualitative methods. The outcomes of this qualitative research show that – with some adjustments in the program – the therapists were positive about ‘Leven met pijn online’ as a self-help method. The therapists observed progress in pain coping in their patients. They observed that their patients themselves were positive about what the program had done for them as well. Further (quantitative) research is recommended in order to find out whether or not the program is suitable for self-help purposes. Problems that need to be addressed beforehand are the lengthy texts and the proper kind and sufficient amount of guidance.
