Abstract:This paper examines if fatigue can be measured in an implicit manner. Through the combination of an explicit and implicit measure of fatigue it was investigated whether fatigue can be measured more precisely than through explicit measures alone. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) has been used to measure implicit automatic associations between fatigue and unpleasantness. The Checklist Individual Strength (CIS) has been used as an explicit measure of fatigue. Moreover, questions referring to the intention to conduct behavior that either requires a high level of energy or a low level of energy were asked. Furthermore, it was investigated whether fatigue can be manipulated through the use of two different timeslots. Participants were asked to participate either in the morning or in the afternoon in this study. In total, 120 students participated in this study and were recruited via the participation pool SONA and through convenience sampling. As hypothesized, the results showed that the explicit and implicit measures of fatigue were indeed related to each other as strong as expected. Furthermore, this study showed that the level fatigue differed significantly over the two conditions. Moreover, the IAT scores had unique predictive value for behavior for which participants needed a low level of energy in addition to the other scores. To sum up, this study showed that a combination of explicit and implicit measures in order to measure fatigue more precisely is indeed reasonable.
