Abstract:Elderly perform motor tasks slower and focus more on accuracy than young people. By slowing down their speed, they can use online feedback to correct movements. This relationship between the speed of movement and accuracy is known as the speed-accuracy trade-off. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between the speed-accuracy trade-off and chunking. Chunking is to combine parts of information to remember this information better. If there is a relationship between the speed-accuracy trade-off and chunking then this would mean that young people show less chunking when they perform a task very accurately and show more chunking if they have to be very fast. To be able to test this, the discrete sequence production (DSP) task is used. With this task sequential representations can be studied by measuring the performance on repeatedly offered keypress sequences. A fast and an accurate group of subjects (18-30 years) practiced a fixed 3-key and a fixed 6-key sequence. By comparing the reaction times within the sequences it could be identified to what extent chunking was used. The results showed that the two groups exhibit chunking to the same extent. So there is no indication that a focus on accuracy leads to less chunking. A possible explanation is that there is a relationship between the speed-accuracy trade-off and the time that is necessary to go on in the chunking mode.
