Abstract:We tested the influence of the two interview styles ‘information-gathering’ and ‘accusatory’ on physiological lie detection through the usage of skin conductance. Former research showed that lies are related with stress and cognitive effort. Whereas other researchers mainly focused at cognitive effort and subjective methods of measurement, we focused on stress in connection with skin conductance. We hypothesized that the difference in skin conductance between lie and truth gets larger with the accusatory interview style compared to the information-gathering style. Thus, we predicted that with the accusatory interview style it is easier to discriminate between lie and truth. In our experiment, the participants had to undergo an interview with one of the two interview styles where they either had to lie replying to all the questions or they had to tell the truth during the interview. Our results show no significant effect of interview style on skin conductance. Therefore, we suppose that the skin conductance was not only influenced through stress but also through cognitive effort. Keywords: information-gathering style, accusatory interview style, skin conductance, stress, lying, police questioning
